La ‘conquista dell’Ovest’ da parte degli statunitensi ha inizio con la costituzione stessa della nuova nazione. E durante l’intero Ottocento, spesso camuffata sotto le spoglie dell’esplorazione geografica e della ricerca scientifica, la penetrazione delle terre sconosciute sarà finalizzata soprattutto a obiettivi di carattere economico: commerciale, agricolo, minerario, industriale. Dal punto di vista più strettamente istituzionale, nella prima parte del secolo, oltre alle popolazioni indiane, gli antagonisti sono gli imperi spagnolo e britannico; dopo la Guerra civile, saranno soltanto gli indiani.References
