Nell’Ottocento, mentre è in atto l’avanzata statunitense verso il Pacifico, sono gettate le basi della sua raffigurazione. Relazioni di viaggio, rassegne giornalistiche, saggi storici, romanzi, quadri e dagherrotipi riscrivono in presa diretta lo scenario che i coloni stanno concretamente occupando e spesso lo chiamano “frontiera”. In questa autocelebrazione hanno molta importanza le opere storiche: in particolare quelle di Washington Irving (1783-1859), George Bancroft (1800-1891) e Francis Parkman (1823-1893) ribadiscono di continuo come la nuova nazione si sia formata liberandosi dall’Europa e immergendosi nel proprio continente. In tale prospettiva esploratori, militari, cacciatori di pelli e agricoltori sono idealizzati quali l’avanguardia della nazione, gli eroi di una impresa unica che si svolge su una frontiera in continuo movimento.Riferimenti bibliografici
